The habit dates back to the end of the 19th century, when the chulapos (persons from Madrid from a humble social stratum) met in protest at Puerta del Sol to eat grapes accompanied by the ringing of bells, as a mockery of the bourgeois tradition of drinking champagne and grapes during the New Year’s Eve agape.<\/p>\n
