José Manuel Pérez Ovejas

José Manuel Pérez Ovejas is one of the most recognized winemakers in our country, he has been recognized as “Winemaker of the Year” and “Best Winemaker in Spain”. At the moment he is Technical Advisor of the Juvé & Camps Prime Brands Group and we took the opportunity to ask him some questions about the newest project of the house: Pagos de Anguix.

What unique features and identity do Pagos de Anguix wines have?

Pagos de Anguix is a great project, a firm commitment by the Juvé & Camps group to settle in the best area of the Ribera del Duero, specifically in Anguix, to produce a great Ribera del Duero wine and a great Spanish wine that somehow way reflects the identity bottling the landscape of Anguix, which is a small town of just 150 inhabitants located in the best area of the Ribera del Duero, at 850 meters above sea level. Somehow, we have a very clear identity and also the style that we want to work with. The personality of Pagos de Anguix wines seeks that factor of uniqueness, of differentiation, of producing wines with depth, depth, with a very clear idea that the market will receive it and that it be a pleasant, attractive wine, but, above all, that great guard wine. We are doing a great job so that whoever comes across a bottle of Pagos de Anguix 10, 15 or 20 years from now knows that they are still drinking great wine.

How do you get such a high quality wine?

This can be achieved because we have a great wine-growing heritage. There are 80 hectares of vineyards, 40% organic, 40% undergoing transformation… Having a high-quality vineyard allows us to produce great wine.

What practices do you carry out to get an organic wine?

Organic wines are achieved by complying with regulations. We cannot apply herbicides, pesticides, synthetic products… we must be very respectful with the environment, with nature, with the landscape that this great grape gives us. Juvé & Camps has been doing this for many years in the Penedès, in the Ribera del Duero, in a very short time, all the wines will be organic. I think it is a very important leap, a new contribution to the world of oenology. It also includes the processes of the warehouse. You have to know how to handle the grapes well, the racking… all the wine processes that are carried out in the winery itself.

What would you say to Juvé & Camps for its 100th anniversary?

A winery that has 100 years of history… that’s a lot. This is a demonstration and evidence that things have been done very well. Meritxell Juvé, Joan Juvé, the ancestors… what the Juvé & Camps group represents in the world of wine. From history, you have to brag. 100 years ago the foundations of what the group is today were laid solidly. You also have to think that, although we can brag about history, I also like to think about the future and the future is impressive. Of course, I want to congratulate the work done by the previous generations and also for what will come from now on.

Thank you very much for your time, José Manuel. We invite everyone to discover the faithful reflection of the Pagos de Anguix area in the wines available in our official online store.
